playing with OpenID

I got the sample code running to play with OpenID PHP client. I have discovered something interesting about how it all works. The client makes a list of what info it needs, and wants. Then sends that info to the server. If you have authorized that site before, it will simply send the data you setup on the server before. If you have not authorized that site, it will ask you what information you should give the site. Then, the server directs you back to the client, at the URL the client told the server to go back to once data has been collected.

Then I looked into the openID plugin for drupal. In the database: the user and password data are the same; there is a new table showing my openID server (less the account name). There are other fields in the table, which I have no idea what they are for. That is what I will try to figure out next.

preview for mac now very full featured.

Preview can now do auto-levels. If you've never done this before, try it on some photo that is a little off. It works like laundry detergent, make your colors brighter, and your whites whiter. I assume this was added in Leopard, as I don't remember this option being there before.

Amazon simpleDB

Amazon announced a new web service, simpleDB; a way to access a s3 database. Cost is close to the other services.

14 cents per an hour. Bandwidth charges are the same as the other services, data storage is 1.50 per a Gigabyte-month. While that is a lot higher than S3 storage, the per-hour charge is based on time used by queries, not instances. At least, that's how I understand it right now. This will take some playing....

off the record

Chatting online may be more popular with a slightly younger crowd, but I still use it, sometimes for rather secure data; for that reason I use OTR, which is a built-in feature to Adium and other chat clients. If it's not made for your chat client, then you can get the proxy.
