forgive me for I have blogged

** do not read if you are eating **

I started out just wanting to post; at most 5 things that I happened to know, now I want this to be my online diary. Then again there are plenty of blogs out there that are little more than diarrhea on paper. Nobody ever reads them... but they are everywhere. Then again, with technoroti, you only need to search, and find the one chunk of solid chuck you were looking for.

In that line of thought, I would like to touch on politics. I don't want this to be a major theme since I don't follow it as well as I should. Remember, Freedom isn't free. Big corporations have freedom because they bought it. If you want a slice of justice, you best pay for it. Care. For the sake of everything you love; care about what is going on. Don't grow callus to all the stuff you hate about it. If politics becomes a dirty subject, something you don't talk about; then your voice will never be heard. The best you can do is really try to understand the other's viewpoint. Study the issue... This is what I struggle with. Don't drink the cool aid of those that agree with you; because nothing should be black and white. If you write to your representatives in a clear, informed, unbiased I am sure they will take your words to heart.

please forgive that little side note... I really should be working on Tim's blog, but needed to put something here since it's been a while again.

auto complete; so darn easy!

Yahoo and google offer javascript libraries. One of the more useful features to the library from yahoo is there auto complete script. Auto complete is really a simple task (example), I was surprised when I found the code. However the one from yahoo is rather full-featured.

Google's kitchen sink script is there UI used on any of there menu systems such as gmail, docs, and reader. They also have an email clone, however I don't see any use for it. All the same, if you find something useful in the Google Web Toolkit, share the love!

All my research into web clients reminds me why there are so many. building for the web is the ultimate in rapid application development. I'd go so far as to say web UI may become the first true 5th generation programing language. Exciting isn't it?

Confusing day

I got a bill from RCN for cable service for the month after canceling my account. Friday I get another one saying final invoice, it shows a credit of $74.60. I don't really understand how this works; I did not get a check nor was there any mention of paying off this balance... I plan to keep this one, and just apply it to when I start using there services again. That should happen in the next two months

Happy day

Today, I am happy!, I gave my girl her ring! She was glowing, giggling, happy, excited, and even a little sad. It's hard to explain someones emotions at this moment. What matters is she loves it. The center stone is one that has been in the family for years. The jeweler said that cut hasn't been done in about 150 years. Which makes me wander just how long it's been in the family?

Internet radio, how we will miss thee

I was listing to the podcast Mac OS Ken. He interviewed Tim Westergren of Pandora radio. He had an interesting answer to why the RIAA would choose to raise the fees to levels that would kill internet radio (at least as we know it.)
It's the old control game. The one that controls what is advertised (I.E. played) on the radio is the one that controls what sells. They are simply fighting for control, so they think by strangling the future, they can save the past... Sounds like a broken record for them doesn't it. as Tim put it,
The 70 Million people that are listening to it (internet radio) are going to go somewhere else, and it ain't going to be with companies that respect copyright. I can tell you that right now.
That is exactly how I feel. Just one more reason I try to listen to more indie artists. I worry about the big labels, they have some good talent, but they keep trowing money at preventing there music from being heard.

funny stuff from the net

I was just messing around with technorati, and found this little gem. It gave me a little laugh, I hope it will do the same for you. The best part, was I found it to learn about Mahmoud Ahmadinejad. Now that I learned to say his name, I wanted to learn why. I am such a stupid american!

Simpsons box set

I want to own every season of the Simpsons, I am only missing season 7 of the ones released as of this posting. Season 8 is nice because it has the season number on the disk. All the rest have only the disk number. Finding if I have an episode or not is becoming quite hard, I am about to make a list of all the shows, just so I have one complete listing.

I would like to hear from another fan. How many of you are buying them up as fast as they are being released? Do you have problems finding the episode you want to see? Do you know if you have that one?

Once you have more than 20 DVD's of simpsons, It's hard to know what you have and what you don't. I'm thinking about copying data from tv.com. If anyone has a better idea, please post it in the comments.

google desktop

well, before I started complaining about it, I wanted to try it. Because I don't have a windows computer, today was my first chance at getting into this. So far, it is a little better than I expected. I only have 66,000 files indexed, however that is plenty to start playing with. So far it seems a little faster, however it's display interface only shows the first XX results. Also, the complete hard drive is not indexed yet. Less data always goes faster.

What I expected to be the biggest drawback is the query interface. Spotlight started out with devlopers in mind. I can search for a file attribute better in spotlight. As best as I can tell, Google Desktop does not include media specific data (like length in time or pixels) It does, however offer a full API set.

One clear advantage: context. Spotlight will give you a list of files. If the file type is PDF, it will open the document, highlighting that portion of text. Google gives you partial text in the search results. This seems to be the MVP of this tool for mac users.

The other two advantages; indexing of gmail, and of websites are not so useful to me so long as long as it works with my email client. Web history, my browser does just fine.

way to go EMI!

I really like this deal with EMI to offer DRM free music.
  • songs will be $1.29 for 256 bit aac
  • if you don't care, you can still get the lower quality track for the old price.
  • upgrade option for previously purchased music
  • album prices still 9.99
  • music videos will also be DRM free, and no price increase

These are some very appealing options to spend even more money on EMI music. I know there are some people that will whine about the price, but until they give away there music, some people will be upset about how much it costs. The only complaint I could see with this deal is, I would have to buy each track of an album I bought before this deal for .30 each. I have more than 450 items purchased from the iTunes store, some of this is no longer in the US store. Most likely I will only have the upgrade option on 5-10 tracks; but that is the way it goes.

I will be waiting for this release with great expiation. Also, I wander if other download media offers will be as appealing as apple's is.
